Helen Keller (Cooper) Mitchum

Helen Keller Cooper Mitchum, 89, of Bonneau Beach, widow of Patrick Mitchum, Sr. passed away Wednesday June 2, 2021.

Helen was born January 28, 1932 in Berkeley County, the daughter of Lloyd Cooper and Louise Keller Cooper Mann.

As the matriarch of her family, Helen was dearly loved by her children and grandchildren. She had been a loyal homemaker, dedicated to caring for and cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner for her family. She enjoyed singing and was a member of several local choirs, Christmas Cantatas were a favorite of hers. Helen had worked as a partner with her husband, Pat, as a secretary at Nationwide Insurance for many years. Helen and Pat enjoyed visiting many of the local churches in the community and considered Russellville Christian their home church. Helen will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Surviving are her children- Patrick Mitchum, Jr. and his wife, Early, of Bonneau Beach; Mike Mitchum and his wife, Sylvia also of Bonneau Beach; Shirley M. Gesling and her husband, Joe, of Summerville; Mary M. Ponds and her husband, Robert, of TN.; 5 grandchildren- Jennifer Simmons; David Patrick Mitchum; Ryan Cobb; Matthew McCants and Rachael Poitras; 3 great grandchildren- Josie Hulett, Omari Simmons and Anaya Simmons. In addition to her parents and husband of 65 years, Helen was predeceased by a brother- Lloyd “Dumpy” Cooper and a son- David Wilbur Mitchum.

Her funeral service will be held at Russellville Christian Church, Monday afternoon, June 7, 2021 at 1 o’clock. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 12 o’clock until the hour of service.
