Todd Eric Ziegert, of North Charleston, S.C., died at home on October 19, 2025, surrounded by his family. Todd was born in Niles, Michigan on July 7, 1963, the son of Raymond Otto Ziegert and LeJoye Johnson Ziegert.
Todd had many hobbies and interests. He loved history (especially European history) and would often read books about the subject; he was a voracious reader also of true crime and science fiction, in particular the works of Philip K. Dick. He loved to practice many different crafting art forms, such as string art and perler bead art. He was a fan of sports, particularly football (Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Cincinnati Bengals) and hockey (Detroit Red Wings). He loved to play hockey both as a young man and in middle age, and also enjoyed playing golf as a young man. He was a fisherman, and would often fish whenever able at any nearby pond or river. He loved to travel on vacation to various parks and other secluded areas in order to fish with his loving wife, Annlee. He was a published author, having written an autobiography and two novels. His autobiography was titled A Collection of Life Stories, and gave much insight especially to the early years of his life to the rest of his family. His first novel was titled Roman Dawcio, while the second was Beaver Island And the Lost Viking Runestone. Writing novels was a life-long ambition of his, which he was able to accomplish in the last few years of his life. He also loved to watch films and was a connoisseur of music, often debating with friends and family about the merits of each. Todd was a dog lover, and had many pets throughout his life that gave him great joy.
Beaver Island held a special place in his heart due to spending summers with his family there in his youth, and gave Todd an appreciation and love of the outdoors which he carried with him until his final days. The following is from the bio of his first novel, Roman Dawcio, which gives a little bit of context regarding his hometown as well as Beaver Island:
"Todd is originally from Cassopolis, Michigan. Cassopolis is in the Michiana region of northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. It is centered on South Bend, Indiana. He also spent a good deal of his young life on Beaver Island in Michigan. The island is part of a 14 island archipelago that is 30 miles from the mainland in northern Lake Michigan."
Todd graduated from Cassopolis Ross Beatty High School in 1981, and subsequently attended Michigan State University. There are many former classmates and acquaintances from that time that remember and cherish their experience with him, where he was known by the nickname "Ziggy."
Todd was known to all as a kind and generous man of strong conviction and character. He would often go out of his way to help those in need, especially any that had less than he did. He was forgiving of mistakes and flaws in character in relation to others, as he recognized the truth that no one is perfect and everyone is deserving of a second chance. He was a considerate and thoughtful gift-giver, and made others feel special due to this unique ability.
Todd is survived by his wife, Annlee Kraus Ziegert, son, Lucas Jay Ziegert and his wife Laura Bersson Ziegert and sisters, Christine Trevillyan, Debbie Keiter and Brenda George.
