Michael Blakley, a retired Dredge Boat and Tug Boat Captain with Southern Dredging of Charleston, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at his sister's home in Beaver Dam. He was born on May 23, 1947, in McClellanville, where he grew to appreciate the simple joys of life.
Michael was well-known not only for his career but also for the warmth and kindness he displayed toward others. He cherished the time spent in church whenever he was able, and the gospel music of Alan Jackson and Josh Turner brought him much happiness. Michael often could be found sitting on the front porch, delighting in the sight of Martins in the spring and indulging in his love for old boats, cast iron collectibles, and classic television, particularly his fondness for watching "Gun Smoke" daily. His preference for Arby's fish sandwiches was a small but significant reflection of his simple yet satisfying tastes.
Throughout his life, Michael took pride in being a member of the McClellanville P.H. Church, a cornerstone of his spiritual journey and social connections. He was surrounded by a loving family, including his wife, Betty Blakley, and several siblings who included Gloria Mills and her husband William, Ann Lucas and her husband Larry, James R. Blakley and his wife Robin, Rev. Geary A. Blakley, Martin Blakley and his wife Pam, and Debra Swails. Michael was truly adored by many nieces and nephews who held him dear in their hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Willard Blakley and Bertha Elizabeth Ackerman Blakley, as well as his first wife, Mary Faith Thames Blakley. His legacy also includes the memory of his daughter, Nancy L. Blakley, and his brother, Leo Lawrence (Bill) Blakley, who have since passed.
Michael Blakley will be remembered not just for his steadfast commitment to his profession and community but also for the love he shared with his family and friends. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him, as they gather to honor the life he led.
