Carl A. Rueger, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and cherished member of the Moncks Corner community, passed away peacefully at his home on March 30, 2026. Born on March 4, 1942, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Carl’s life was marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and faith.
Carl graduated from Berkeley High School in 1960 and furthered his education by attending Business School in Columbia. Early in his career, he worked for three years at Otis Elevator, before answering the call to serve his country. He joined the U.S. Army Reserves, where he committed six years of service to his unit. Later, Carl worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Charleston, a period during which he met the love of his life, Mary. They were married on September 12, 1965, and two years later were blessed with a daughter.
In 1966, Carl began a long and dedicated tenure with the Moncks Corner Public Works Commission, serving his community faithfully until his retirement in 2013. His steady commitment to public service was a hallmark of his character and something he carried with pride.
Carl was a longstanding member of Wassamassaw Baptist Church, embracing his faith as a cornerstone of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his beloved family, fishing, hunting, four-wheeling, and traveling—particularly to Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Austin Rueger; his daughter, Sharon R. Whitley, and her husband, Jeff; granddaughters Lauren Whitley and Kaitlyn Whitley; great-granddaughter Rylynn Alejo; and honorary granddaughter Hailey Howard. Among those who will also hold Carl dearly in their hearts are many special cousins and friends who knew him as a kind and dependable presence. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Harold William Rueger and Lurline Sweatman Rueger.
Family and friends are invited to honor his memory at a visitation Wednesday, April 1, 2026, beginning at 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM, followed by funeral services at 3:00 PM, both held at Wassamassaw Baptist Church, located at 704 Wassamassaw Ln, Moncks Corner, SC. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family would like to thank the 7th floor nurses at Trident Hospital and the caregivers and hospice with Interim Healthcare.
