Carl A. Rueger was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a cherished member of the Moncks Corner community. He passed away peacefully at his home in Moncks Corner, South Carolina on March 30, 2026. He was born in the same house on March 4, 1942. Carl’s life was marked by faith, dedication, service, and above all, a deep and unwavering love for his family.
Carl graduated from Berkeley High School in 1960 and furthered his education by attending Business School in Columbia, South Carolina. He began his career working for Otis Elevator Company for three years, before answering the call to serve his country and committing six years of service to the U.S. Army Reserves. Later, Carl worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Charleston, SC, before beginning his long and dedicated tenure with the Moncks Corner Public Works Commission. Carl served his community faithfully and proudly for 47 years, from 1966 to his retirement in 2013. His steady commitment to public service was one of the many hallmarks of his character, which was defined by loyalty, hard work, and strong faith.
Carl was a longstanding member of Wassamassaw Baptist Church, where his dedication to faithful servitude was a cornerstone of his life. In addition to his life of service, Carl was unquestionably dedicated to the love of his life, Mary. Carl and Mary met at Wassamassaw Baptist Church, where they were married years later on September 12, 1965 and began their beautiful marriage of over 60 years. Carl’s proudest accomplishment was his daughter Sharon and he enjoyed more than anything spending time with his beloved family. Carl loved fishing, hunting, four-wheeling, boating, camping, and traveling–particularly to Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Austin Rueger; his daughter, Sharon R. Whitley, and her husband, Jeff; twin granddaughters Lauren Whitley and Kaitlyn Whitley; great-granddaughter Rylynn Alejo; and honorary granddaughter Hailey Howard. Among those who will also hold Carl dearly in their hearts are many special cousins and friends who knew him as a kind and dependable presence. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Harold William Rueger and Lurline Sweatman Rueger.
