Robert Pinckney Rhett, affectionately known as "Bob," passed away peacefully at his home in Pinopolis, South Carolina, on July 26, 2025, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on November 11, 1955, in Columbia, South Carolina, and became a cherished member of the community and a devoted family man.
Bob's passion for music was evident from a young age. His musical career spanned an impressive 54 years, during which he performed frequently throughout Georgia, North and South Carolina, and even in Germany. Bob was a gifted musician who played the guitar, bass, and drums with zeal, entertaining audiences in numerous local bands, notably the Sweaty Pets and Customs Four. In the 1970s, he enjoyed a notable career in Columbia, where he had a recurring musical role on the local news, further solidifying his reputation as a talented performer.
In addition to his musical talents, Bob distinguished himself professionally as a dedicated individual in the field of computer science. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of South Carolina, and went on to work as a Santee Cooper NERC Compliance Specialist from 2015 to 2025. His prior roles included serving as the Manager of Information Systems at Asahi Kasei Spandex America from 2005 to 2014, and as a Plant Engineer for Beyer from 1995 to 2005.
Bob was also a long-standing member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Pinopolis, where he contributed his gifts to the choir and vestry. His willingness to assist others as an IT specialist was a testament to his generous spirit. Throughout his life, Bob formed deep connections with people from all walks of life, believing music had the power to transcend differences and bring joy to those around him. He cherished the ability to put smiles on the faces of those who heard his music.
Bob was a beloved family man, and is survived by his wife, Susan, who was his steadfast partner in life, along with his dog Leo. He leaves behind three daughters: Taylor, Elisabeth, and Virginia, along with grandchildren Jacob, Payne, and Vivienne, and a great-grandchild, Melissa. He is also survived by his brother, James Rhett, and his family. He was predeceased by his father, James Moore Rhett, his mother, Anne Nell Flood Rhett, and his older brother, Alfred.
There will be a memorial service to honor Bob's life on July 31, 2025, at Trinity Church in Pinopolis, beginning at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow, allowing friends and family to share their memories and celebrate the contributions Bob made to all who knew him. All are welcome to join in this special occasion to pay tribute to an extraordinary man whose legacy will continue to resonate through the lives he touched.
